Not sure how the stats for this site are organized, but they take data provided by Last.fm and Amazon.com and compile some sort of band relationship spider chart for whatever band or artist you search for.
I think it's mostly based on what people of certain bands listen to, and not actually how bands are actually related to each other in terms of shared members or releases.
